SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being 

HKUST is dedicated to creating healthy and thriving communities through our efforts in cutting-edge research, mental health support, and community outreac.  We aim to build a campus that is equipped to meet the needs of our diverse community by fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that prioritizes a holistic view of health.

Research

 

From 2018 to 2022, HKUST published 1242 research papers related to health and well-being.    

 

Through extensive research and educational initiatives, HKUST aims to enhance understanding and improve outcomes related to health and well-being, fostering a culture of responsible teaching and student development.  

An international research team, led by Prof. Nancy IP identified a blood protein that plays a key role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease[<extra space remove]. The findings reveal an innovative strategy in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s development and ameliorating disease pathologies in individuals living with the disease.  

August 2022: HKUST Scientists, led by Prof. Nancy IP, identify an innovative strategy targeting a blood protein for therapeutic treatment of Alzheimer's Disease 

Our researchers developed a new hydrogel that can improve the health of homes by controlling odor problems and microbial contaminations in drainage and flushing systems. With the ability to kill 99% of the Omicron virus, hydrogel has won silver medal at the 2022 Special Edition of the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions and is being trialed in the building flush water tanks for 2,880 flats at three public housing blocks in collaboration with the Housing Authority, as well as an elderly home of the Haven of Hope Christian Service. 

May 2022: HKUST researchers develop a new hydrogel technology to treat odors and germs in drains and flush water. 

 

Mental Health Support

 

Through our Counselling and Wellness Center students and staff can arrange counselling sessions and access a 24-hour helpline for support. we also invite the community to openly discuss vital mental health topics such as Sexual Health, Safe Sex, and Trauma and We can Heal What We Feel improved understanding about the connection between emotional well-being and overall health.  

In collaboration with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the “Chill” Up Your Heart,  camp provided students with a mindful break and an opportunity to learn and practice self-care..  

Fall 2022: Chill Up Your Heart day camp taught students how to practice self-care.  

 

MindMatters

 

In April 2022, our Division of Public Policy launched MindMatters improve mental wellbeing among Hong Kong's major ethnic minorities. The innovative program trains “lay leaders” from these communities in mental health first aid, MindMatters aims to destigmatize mental health issues while establishing community-based mental health support networks. 

 

Industry Collaboration 

 

 

The HKUST Center for Aging Science focuses on understanding healthy aging and promoting physical and psychological well-being in old age. The research is interdisciplinary, covering genomics, social impacts, decision analytics, and technology-based solutions. With projects like Facial Landmark Detection, Improving Heathcare Operations, Smart Wheelchairs, and The Search of Cure for Alzheimer’s,  

With a partnership with Haven of Hope Christian Service (HOHCS), combine expertise in aging research and elderly care services to better prepare future generations for aging.

HKUST entered into an agreement with China Resources Research Institute of Science and Technology for long-term strategic cooperation in the fields of molecular neuroscience, sustainable development and microelectronics, as well as establishing a joint research center for brain science. The agreement also provides internship or job opportunities for HKUST students and graduates at China Resources Research Institute.

Community Outreach 

 

HKUST Connect actively engages with the community through programmes like Kiddy Online Game Day Online Game, Zoom U Next Time with Elderly, and Mid-Autumn Festival Visit - Let Care Reach Street Cleaners and Scavengers, we aim to improve the overall health and well-being of individuals in various target groups. By providing support, companionship, and care, HKUST Connect fosters positive social interactions and promotes the well-being of participants and community members.  

Sept 2022: Partnering with The Salvation Army, HKUST volunteers visit street cleaners and scavengers in Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei. 

 

Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab 

 

As part of the Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab (SSC) initiative, the SmART Sounds project aims to enhance the well-being and experience of individuals on campus. By introducing acoustic interventions in select areas, including the complementing artwork in SmART Steps stairwells, SmART Sounds seeks to create a soothing atmosphere by incorporating nature-inspired sounds proven to reduce stress hormones. The project also fosters collaboration between faculty, students, and staff in designing, installing, and studying the effects of these interventions.
