Food waste

The University generated 427,519 kg of food waste in the year 2022-23, increasing by 9.67% compared to 2021-22. Food waste per capita is 20.04 kg, increasing by 5.6%, mainly due to resumption of normal operations on campus.

The University has launched food waste collection and recycling program in September 2016 and began at canteens. Later then, the program has since grown to include Junior Staff Quarters and office pantries. During the 2020-21 academic year, we joined the Source Separation Programme of Food Waste for the Food & Beverage (F&B) trade organised by Hong Kong Productivity Council. They appointed an outside contractor to collect the food waste every day from 11 locations in the campus, together with the help of the canteens, students and staff, 389 tons food waste were diverted to animal feeds and compost.
